How medical practices win the Google Map Pack

The three-result map pack is where many patients choose a provider. Here is what actually moves a practice into it — and how to keep your listing accurate.

Local search results and map listings for a medical practice

When someone searches for a doctor, dentist or clinic “near me,” Google often shows a small map with three business listings above the regular results. That block — the local map pack — is where a large share of patients start and finish their decision. For many practices, appearing there matters more than any single organic ranking.

The map pack is driven by its own signals, separate from the rest of search. Understanding those signals is the difference between guessing and steadily improving your local visibility.

Start with an accurate Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the foundation. Google pulls the name, address, phone number, hours, categories and services shown in the map pack directly from it. If any of that is wrong or incomplete, both patients and Google lose confidence in your listing.

  • Use your exact practice name — no added keywords or locations that are not part of the real name.
  • Choose the most specific primary category for your specialty, then add relevant secondary categories.
  • Keep address, phone and hours identical to what appears on your website.
  • List your services and, where relevant, the conditions you treat, in plain language.

Consistency across the web (citations)

Google cross-checks your details against directories, health listings and your own site. When your name, address and phone number match everywhere, your listing looks trustworthy. When they conflict — an old suite number here, a former phone line there — that doubt can hold you out of the pack.

For practices with multiple locations, this is where many lose ground. Each office needs its own consistent profile and its own location page, not a single blended listing.

Reviews, answered thoughtfully

Review volume, recency and your responses all factor into local visibility — and they are what patients read first. A steady flow of genuine reviews, with courteous, HIPAA-aware responses, signals an active, trusted practice. Never incentivise reviews or respond with any patient detail the reviewer did not already share publicly.

Location-relevant content on your site

The map pack leans on your website too. Clear service pages, a well-structured location page for each office, and content that reflects the communities you serve all reinforce that your practice is relevant to local searches.

What to expect

Local visibility develops over time as your profile, citations, reviews and site improve together. There is no switch to flip — but a practice that keeps these fundamentals accurate and active is the one that tends to hold its place in the pack. If you would like a review of where your practice stands, that is exactly where our local SEO work begins.
